It was first created to follow and analyze business news, and top stories. Gradually over time it started to add sub-category's like Market Insider, and Tech Insider.

It was co-founded by former CEO Kevin P. Ryan, Dwight Merriman, and Henry Blodget. Henry Blodget is the CEO and Editor in Chief. DoubleClick officially was the founder, and now Axel Springer owns the majority of the company.

When it became popularBusiness insider was created in February 2009, and was based in New York. In 2010 it reported it's first profit, in June 2012 it had 5.4 million viewers. And now it averages to 70 million a month.
